SD House Panel Endorses Bonus Pay Idea

Pierre, sd

A South Dakota House committee has endorsed the idea of giving state workers a one-time bonus, but the panel made changes that leave the size of any bonus in doubt.

The Appropriations Committee voted unanimously to send the bill to the full House. But the committee also stripped money for the bonuses from the bill.

Committee Chairman Dean Wink of Howes says lawmakers will make final decisions on the details of any bonus plan later in the week.  The measure would give state workers bonuses equal to 5 percent of their salaries, but no full-time employee who has worked for the state at least three years would get less than $2,300 or more than $7,500.

Employees who have worked for the state less than three years would get reduced bonuses.
