South Dakota state agencies will welcome about 20 percent fewer interns to Pierre this summer.
The number of internships dropped from 251 last year to 202 in 2014.
Bureau of Human Resources Commissioner Laurie Gill says each agency determines how many interns to hire according to need, budget and existing staff.
The number of intern applicants is down, too, from 854 last year to 707 this year. Gill attributes that to a decrease in open positions and the state's workforce climate. She says there are more jobs than available people.
The internship program is a way for state offices to recruit, and many departments hire former interns into full-time positions.
