Restaurant Owner Reflects On Ever-Changing Industry

The closing of a longtime Sioux Falls restaurant is coming as a surprise to its competitors.

Bracco World Cafe at the Bridges at 57th will shut its doors at the end of the year, along with the nearby Starz sports bar.

The owner of The Barrel House in southeast Sioux Falls says bars and restaurants have to be adaptable in the ever-changing restaurant industry.  Millennials are driving much of that change.

"I think a lot of it is the younger generation is starting to go to more local establishments.  You can tell that by the downtown breweries and all that.  I think the chains are starting to see a bit of a struggle.  I know Bracco wasn't a chain, but I know the younger generation can make or break you," Mark Fonder said.

Fonder says The Barrel House's business has been stronger than expected in the year it's been open, drawing many customers from the densely-populated apartment complexes nearby.
