Rapid City Seeing Lower Gas Prices Than Sioux Falls

Rapid City, SD

If you've done much traveling across South Dakota, you've likely noticed high gas prices in Rapid City compared to Sioux Falls.

However, right now gas in Sioux Falls is about $2.45 for a gallon of regular gas.

In Rapid City it's about 20 cents lower.

For Tresea Harriet, filling up with gas isn't so bad, especially when gas prices look like this.

"It's extremely nice, this my mom's car, I have a Ford pickup so when you fill it up it's like $80, this is going to be much softer," Tresea Harriet, filling up with gas said.

Typically, Rapid City is on the higher end for gas prices compared to east river, but right now that isn't the case.

"What's actually happening is we had back to back hurricanes and the gulf coast refineries are the ones that support the east gas supply," Rhonda Keller, AAA Rapid City Branch Manager said.

Currently prices of gas in Rapid City range from a low of $2.09 to a high of $2.25, yet at most places you'll see gas at $2.19.

"We are supplied by refineries out on the west near Casper, so we actually weren't affected by the hurricanes," Keller said.

Keller says these prices in Rapid City are about average compared to last year. As for the east, the refineries should be back to normal shortly.

"They're at 85 percent right now so we'll expect them to be at full capacity within the next week, so Sioux Falls prices will start to fall probably back down to the normal ranges in the next month," Keller said.

As for Harriet, these prices are something she hopes stick around.

"Makes it a lot easier on the pocketbook," Harriet said.

Keller adds once summer vacation season is over, drivers typically see lower gas prices as the colder months approach, due to supply and demand.
