Sioux Falls, SD
It was a damp day for anyone heading out to the fairgrounds.
It was a wet day at the Sioux Empire Fair. But since it was Farmer Appreciation Day, there were also plenty of people happy to see some moisture.
"When it rains in August in South Dakota, we jump up and down," fair volunteer Jim Woster said.
Woster has worked with the fair for about 35 years. He says this kind of rain won't soak any farmers' spirits.
"These are farm folks, and this rain is just a God-send for so many of them. They've been waiting for a shower or two and this is one that they wanted. So one, they can't do too much at home this morning. And number two, they're just enjoying the rain and they're enjoying the fair. It's a great day," Woster said.
But not everyone shares that sentiment.
The rain has caused many vendors to close up shop and forced the rides to shut down.
Sammi Bjelland: What do you think of the fair?
Madi Lewis: It's amazing, but all I really wanted to ride was the Ferris wheel.
Sammi: Oh, and the Ferris wheel isn't open, is it?
Sammi: How did that make you feel?
Madi: Well, sad.
Even though the wet rain has been a damper for some people, they're still enjoying what the fair does have to offer in the rain.
"We'd walk through the Expo building and looked at what people had for display," fair visitor Carissa Anderson said.
"Getting balloons. Looking at different animals. Going to see the baby animals. And eating, of course; you can't forget about the eating," fair visitor Megan Fields said.
Trying to make the most of a damp situation.
Despite the wet conditions, Woster says the rain did not impact attendance numbers too greatly.
