New Businesses Coming To Harrisburg

Harrisburg, SD

Construction will be hot this summer in Harrisburg.  In addition to a new Fareway store, work will soon start on a number of other projects.

It's no secret that the city of Harrisburg is growing.

"A lot of good, positive things," resident Barb Dayton said.

Yet, many who live there still drive to Sioux Falls to get their essentials.

"I do every day," Dayton said.

Dayton will soon be making that trip less often. Crews are building a grocery store in the town. Fareway is expected to open just in time for a Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham.

"Grocery stores are anchors for neighborhood services. When they come, they bring automatic traffic to the front door. The other business owners look at that, and they want to be right next to it because they know people will be coming and going," developer Steve Van Buskirk with Van Buskirk Companies said.

Van Buskirk says he just signed a lease for the lot east of Fareway. To the north, crews will soon start work on a retail mall that will house four businesses, and Van Buskirk says he has a lot of interest in the lot just west of Fareway. He hopes a fast food restaurant will build there.

"We're really focused on providing those services and key elements that are missing," Van Buskirk said.

In addition to retail, the development will also have around 100 homes in the $350,000 to $450,000 price range.

"Harrisburg really hasn't had a spot in previous years to build the next step of houses. A lot of people when they were in the Harrisburg School District and live in Harrisburg, if they wanted to build a bigger and better house, they kind of drifted to the south end of Sioux Falls," Van Buskirk said.

It's all new development that Dayton says will provide new life to the growing town.

"It's going to be a good thing. We don't have to go to Sioux Falls for groceries. We don't have to go to Sioux Falls for a lot anymore," Dayton said.

Just to the east of Devitt Farms, the city of Harrisburg is working on Foundation Park.

When it's done, it will likely have a pool, playground and football, softball and tee ball fields.
