Sioux Falls, SD
The Sioux Falls Air Show only comes around every three years and it takes flight this weekend. But with temperatures rising organizers are preparing early to help everyone stay safe and hydrated.
With all of the safety precautions required for planes, officials with the Sioux Falls Airshow aren't taking ay chances with the safety of the audience.
"But as people come out we want them to be properly prepared. The heat index this weekend is going to demand respect from the people that come out. We want people to enjoy the airshow but we also want everyone to have a safe experience in the process," Wing Executive Support Officer Lt. Col. Reid Christopherson said.
And giving that safe experience begins with water.
"We have got water, we will have water bottles for sale but there is also going to be water tanks that they can get free water from as well. We want people to get to that water and not feel that they are limited so there is going to be easy access to the water," Rick Tupper with the Executive Board of the Sioux Falls Airshow said.
Water will not only come in the form of drinking but a fine mist as well.
"There are also going to be some misting tents where there is a fine mist that people can walk through. It won't get you wet but it will still cool you down a little bit," Tupper said.
And while preparations begin days before here on the air base officials are encouraging you to prepare early as well.
"That preparation for a safe airshow experience starts at home and it starts today. Start hydrating and start substituting some of those caffeinated beverages with water; get it into you," Christopherson said.
And just in case you feel the effects of the heat, the base is prepared for that too.
"We are going to be prepared. We are there to help people. If someone is feeling the effects, get help early, get to one of our aid tents and we will get you taken care of," Christopherson said.
Officials with the airshow expect this weekend's event to be one of the best in the nation. The Sioux Falls Airshow runs Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on what you can bring, what's not allowed and flight schedules, check out the Sioux Falls Airshow website.
