Gas Prices Down For The Holidays

Sioux Falls, SD

Travelers hitting the roads for Thanksgiving might be experiencing a little déjà vu when they make a stop to fill up their gas tanks.

Gas prices have recently flirted with and occasionally passed the $4 per gallon threshold.  But, drivers can the thankful this holiday that prices have recently retreated from that point.  Gas is $3.18 for a gallon of regular at one Sioux Falls station, a decrease Ashley Hauge is thankful for as she sets off for a day with family in Minnesota.

"It's about two hours one way and then two hours back," Hauge said.

So for her, the recent decrease is a welcome sight.

"It costs a lot of money to fill up but it's worth it to spend Thanksgiving with family," Hauge said.

Nationally, drivers are paying an average of $3.43 per gallon, up nine cents from this time last year, according to AAA.  In Sioux Falls, drivers are paying 14 cents less; the average gallon is going for 3.29, just one cent higher than one year ago.

"They're a lot lower than they are at home, about 21 cents lower," driver Heath Anderson said.

Experts add that relief at the pump may continue.  They say decreasing demand as well as a cheaper winter blend of fuel could continue to push prices down for the next several weeks.

"It's nice to see them come down.  Driving truck, I buy quite a bit a fuel a week.  So with them coming down it's a nice relief," Anderson said.

"They've been higher, but lately they've been going down so that's nice.  Hopefully they'll stay this way or even drop," Hauge said.

And that would be a Christmas present any driver is sure to enjoy.

If your holiday travels take you south, you could run into the lowest average price of gas in the country. Right now, that honor belongs to Missouri where drivers are paying an average of $3.08 per gallon.
It's not surprising that Hawaii drivers are paying the most at more than $4 per gallon.
