Work continues on the downtown rail yard relocation project in Sioux Falls. Tuesday afternoon, the city council got an update on the progress.
It is a project the city has been talking about for well over 10 years. After years of discussions and planning on how to move a switchyard out of downtown, less than two months ago, the rail company stepped in and offered to sell the land to the city. Both sides are now working out the details of the deal.
The sale would allow the city to redevelop a 9.5 acre section of land. Not all of the tracks would be removed; there would still be two sets of tracks in downtown.
In addition, a two or three track interchange will need to be built up along Rice Street, but it would be smaller than what was previously proposed at that location.
