Cash To Haul Trash

Sioux Falls, SD

If you're looking for a good paying job, there are lots of openings right now in Sioux Falls.  Some companies are offering some big incentives to lure in potential candidates including Novak Sanitary Services where the owners are offering big cash to haul the trash.

After serving two tours in Afghanistan with the Marine Corps, Alex Schwartz immediately began working at Novak Sanitary Services in Sioux Falls as a garbage hauler and he hasn't regretted it.

"Steady paycheck.  You're pretty much on your own all day.  Work as fast as you can and get done when you can and clock out and go home," Schwartz said.

Schwartz is one of about 60 drivers at Novak, but the garbage hauler needs at least three more.  That's why it's offering a nice starting salary, plus benefits.

"Right now, we're telling our new hires they're going to make more then $40,000 their first year, end up with a $5,000 sign on bonus, great group health plan after 60 days, 401k," owner Bob Novak said.

Yet finding qualified workers is still hard.

Novak says it's not just South Dakota's low unemployment rate that's hindering the hiring process at Novak.

"Right now, it's three fold.  Certainly the oil fields have pulled people out of Sioux Falls, qualified CDL DOT physical passed drivers are hard to find, and then a ramp up in our business," Novak said.

A business they admit is not for everyone.

"It's a stinky job, but somebody's got to do it," Schwartz said.

"We just haul it.  We pull the cart up to the truck; we dump it.  We don't play in it; we don't get it all over us.  Our mechanics get 10 times dirtier than our garbage truck drivers," Novak said.

Drivers who have this to say when talking trash.

"People are friendly.  Good place to work.  If I had the chance to do it again, I would," Schwartz said.
