Car vs Bus Crash Injures Two Teens

Two Iowa teenagers are hospitalized after colliding with a school bus early Tuesday morning.  It happened just east of Inwood on 240th Street at about 7:45 a.m.

None of the children on the school bus were hurt, but the 16-year-old driver of the car and his 14-year-old brother were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

Authorities say the driver of a Netherlands Reformed Christian School bus was driving her daily route and had stopped in front of a house to pick up children when the crash happened.

"The bus was stopped, the lights were flashing, and the stop sign was out and a car just came up behind and ran into the back of it, rear-ended it," Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep said.

By the time our cameras arrived on the scene, everything had already been cleaned up, including the bus and car.

Authorities tell KELOLAND News there were 15 children on the bus at the time and all of them appear to be okay. The two people in the car have serious injuries.

Vander Stoep applauds the mother at the home where the bus was stopped.  He says she was instrumental in sheltering the kids on the bus from the crash scene.

"Something like this could be very traumatic for younger kids, so if they can get away from that and not see it, that's definitely better for them," Vander Stoep said.

Officers still aren't sure what caused the crash, but they are thankful more children weren't hurt.

"It's a good thing buses are big and they protect their cargo, but it's still important, school just started, we're only three days into the school year and we're having a bus accident already.  It's just a reminder to pay attention to everything going on on the road and watch for flashing lights and stop signs and drive with caution," Vander Stoep said.

At last report, the sheriff says both teenagers are in Sioux Falls hospitals in stable condition.
