Campground Thrives Three Years After Floods

Yankton, SD

Three years ago, a Yankton campground was under water; it's now filled with campers.

Besides a few showers this weekend, it's been idyllic camping weather. But that wasn't the case just a few years ago.

In 2011, flooding caused some major problems along the Missouri River. Larson's Landing near Yankton was hit hard.

"You know that was really hard. It took a toll on Doug and I because this was our dream. And then we, one day got up and thought, 'We better start over.' So we did," owner Linda Larson said.

Linda Larson and her husband, Doug, own Larson's Landing. They've been busy rebuilding and adding some new touches. They've added a new community center, nearly 40 new camping units and new parking space.

Some remnants of the flood have actually helped with the rebuilding process.

"When you think about it, we had at least 150,000 sandbags down here. That's a lot to get rid of," Larson said.
"And so whenever we needed to build up some land, we just took the sandbags."

"It was unreal to us, and how far they've come since then," camper Bonnie Palmer said.

Bonnie Palmer and her husband, Tom, joined Larson's Landing just after the flood recovery began three years ago. They say you wouldn't know now that there were issues just a couple years back.

"They have changed it so much since we first came over, it is just unreal. And we see Linda driving around in her little golf cart working just about every day we're here," Palmer said.

Even though the Larsons won't forget what happened three years ago, they're excited about what their dream has become.

"We've done some major changes here. It's been really, really hard work. But it's really good now, and we're still working a little bit but we're almost done," Larson said.

Larson says they have also hired on an activities director to create new ways for campers to stay active all summer.
