Biodiesel Facility Opens In Sioux Falls

sioux falls, sd

Good news for the state's Biodiesel users; the fuel will now be available year-round.

A year-round Biodiesel blending facility opened Wednesday in Sioux Falls.

The clean-burning renewable fuel is made of new and used vegetable oils, animal fats and recycled restaurant grease. It has previously been unavailable during cold months. The new blending facility changes that.

“When we put it in our school buses, when we put it in our snow removal equipment, that it has been blended properly. They know how to blend it, and it's going to be a good, safe, fuel without any problems,” Bob Metz with the South Dakota soybean research and promotion council said.

“It's produced over five thousand direct and indirect jobs. And the soybeans we raise is used to produce the biodiesel, so the economic activity or output is about 900 million a year,” Jim Willers with the Minnesota soybean research and promotion council said.

Two 20,000 gallon underground tanks will store the fuel. One is heated, which helps keep it usable the entire year.
