Bank Installs Interactive Teller Machines

Rock Rapids, IA

The bank of the future has arrived in KELOLAND. We've all heard of an ATM, but Frontier Bank is the first in our area to install a new high-tech ITM.

The Interactive Teller Machine uses video technology so customers can do much more than just deposit or withdraw money.

It looks like an ATM, but this new machine has a teller via video to help customers who use it. Some of the first in our area to experience this new ITM are Frontier Bank customers in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

"I deposited $100 and I asked for $10 back and I talked to a live person," Bowers said.

Marlene Bowers was surprised by how easy it was to use and that's the idea--not to intimidate people by technology.

"I've been watching older people use the machine and they've been excited about it," Frontier Bank President Rick Anderson said.

"I thought that was pretty awesome," Bowers said.

The ITM will allow Frontier to expand beyond "banker's hours." The real person on the other end of the ITM machine will be available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"It will allow our employees to expand in other areas to give better customer service with this machine assisting in their jobs," Anderson said.

And customers can do more with an ITM than an ATM, like make loan payments and transfer money between accounts.

While the machine in Rock Rapids is the first for Frontier, it plans to put one in at its new downtown location in Sioux Falls at 9th and Phillips this fall. Frontier will have seven ITMs in all of its locations by next spring.

There are about 500 ITMs nationwide in 100 banks. But Frontier's will the first in South Dakota.
