Snow In The Forecast For Black Hills

Even though parts of KELOLAND were able to break out in sunshine today, temperatures remained cool with highs about 10 to 15 degrees below average. Unfortunately, the cold May temperatures will continue for the next couple of days and with it, there will be a chance for snow.

Of course, the best chance for snow will be in western South Dakota across the southern Hills. Amounts of snow in Custer could be around 2 to 6 inches. As the energy transfers into eastern KELOLAND, temperatures will be cold enough to support light snow.

While temperatures at the cloud level will be cold enough to get snow to fall, there's still the question of whether it will remain cold enough all the way to the surface to get the snow to hit the ground.

While it does seem strange to get accumulating snow in May, records show that accumulating snow has fallen in the Hills as late as June. In Sioux Falls, May 18 is the latest we've had measurable snow.
