Recent Record Warmth In January

In a typical winter, you may have heard one of the meteorologist talk about the "January thaw". While we don't have much to thaw this January, the dry and snow-free ground is what we have to thank for our record high temperatures this week.

While it may seem unusual, it wasn't too long ago that we were going through the same stretch of weather in January.  Overall, since 1990, Sioux Falls has set six record highs in the month of January. The warmest temperature in January since 1990 was when we hit 63 on January 26 in 2002.

Sioux Falls averages one day of 50 degrees or warmer in January. The most we've had since 1990 was
five days, which occurred in 2002.

So enjoy the warm weather now; we know how fast things can change.
