The last significant rain in Sioux Falls was back on September 3 and much of KELOLAND is still in the worst category of drought.
The best chance for rain early this weekend remains in the far southeast but we've been watching storms going from the desert southwest through Kansas.
Areas around Las Vegas have received more than two inches of rain since Thursday. That's caused some minor flooding problems near the normally arid city.
Rain reports from the system advancing our way brought more than two inches of rain to both southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. But the rain those areas received Friday morning could prove to rob KELOLAND of future rains this weekend. That's because moisture in the thunderstorms gets sapped by the heavy rains and hail, leaving little left in the clouds as they head our way.
These areas to our south were among the hardest hit by the drought. It looks like Iowa, Kansas and Missouri will need to see improvement before we're back to normal. That's because their spring crop carries moisture and humidity into KELOLAND. While much of the agricultural need for rain ended with the harvest, it would still be nice to see rain, even for a morale boost.
