Planting Time Nears For Gardeners

Take a look around town and you'll see greenhouses are filling up with plants and flowers. Though I'm not discouraging anyone from purchasing anything, you just might want to wait awhile before putting them in the ground.

The average last date for temperatures to fall 32 degrees occurs during the first or second week of May. Yankton is a little sooner with an average date of April 29. Watertown is the latest with an average date of May 15.

Keep in mind, we don't have to fall to 32 degrees to get frost. It can still occur under the right conditions if temperatures fall to the middle 30s. While trees and bushes are more hardy, as for myself, I usually wait until Mother's Day weekend to plant tender vegetation, such as flowers, tomatoes and peppers.
