Humboldt Man Catches Funnel Cloud On Camera

Humboldt, SD

The storms started developing west of Sioux Falls just after 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon and a Humboldt man captured the tornado on his phone.

Matt Jensen walked outside a Humboldt gas station and witnessed the funnel cloud dropping from the sky.

"It was very spontaneous. I was shocked that it came about so fast but it is South Dakota and our weather turns like that," Jensen said.

Jensen didn't see the tornado actually touch down but he watched it as it was forming near Humboldt.

"I saw a small vortex just starting to swirl and then all of a sudden it started getting longer and heading toward the ground and I figured I better get video tape of it," Jensen said.

Jensen is surprised he was able to capture the funnel cloud on camera.

"Usually when we have a tornado around here, it's toward the evening so it’s buried in the storm so you don't get to see it," Jensen said.

The storm also packed strong pea-size hail and heavy rain.
