USATF Junior Olympic Championships

Sioux Falls, SD

The path to the lone star state began when three local athletes won a qualifying meet in Fargo, North Dakota.  Based on those results, they competed in the Region 8 meet in Omaha, Nebraska.  The trio finished in the top five in their respective events, and punched their ticket to the Junior National Olympic Championships in Texas.

“And so we’re sending actually three athletes and their all in the 13-14 age groups. We have one young lady that running the 100 and 200, she qualified third for the region. Then we have  two young me, also 13 and 14, who qualified in the 100 and 200 as well,” said Carl Teer.

Without question, qualifying for the national event is one of the biggest accomplishments of these kids’ young lives.  They will be representing South Dakota, as they take on top competition from across the county.

“Yeah, it’s a big accomplishment for me. I didn’t think I would ever make it this far. I imagined it, and now I’m really happy to be here and going,” said Delly Saaez

The youngsters have earned this opportunity through hard work, and leave for Texas in just over a week.  It’s safe to say, they’re feeling a wide range of emotions leading up to the championships.

“I’m excited yet nervous, because you never know what’s going to happen in a track meet.  Like When I usally come up and race guys, they think I’m automatically going to win. I say, you never know what’s going to happen,” said DeMareio Hester.

“I’m nervous. Really nervous because I’m going to a new place and there a lot of new people too,” said Saaez

Regardless of the results, Coach Teer, has helped these kids become stronger members of the community.  Building character, staying humble, and learning life responsibilities is one race that they have already won.

“He helped me build character, to be responsibility, to have an overall good and genuiune personality that other people will enjoy being around,” Jacob Becker

“be Humble he said. Because if you’re not, someone else is going to come in and you’re not going to be humble and they’re going to take your spot,” said Hester.
