SDSU Football Prepares For Season

Brookings, SD

It's spring and that means the SDSU football team is back at work getting ready for the 2013 season. While the Jackrabbits enjoyed a lot of success this past year, a new campaign is underway and the team needs a good spring to get ready for their opening game against Butler.

"The first thing is we're saying this is the start of the 2013 season and that focus to take that next step and honestly be a more disciplined football team," head coach John Stiegelmeier said.

One of the question marks surrounding SDSU is on defense. The Jacks lost five starters, including both safeties and two linebackers. Sophomore TJ Lally is one of the players looking to step up.

"I think with our off-season workout and the way the younger guys have picked up a lot of what we are doing on defense as fast as they have been, I'm really not worried about it I think by the time we are down with spring ball and fall camp we won't really have missed a beat," Lally said.

On offense SDSU is returning a lot of firepower including quarterback Austin Sumner and running back Zach Zenner. One of the Jacks' anchors is O-lineman Bryan Witzmann. The All-American is joined by three other returning starters in the trenches.

"Us four offensive seniors we've logged a lot of hours on that field. That experience definitely makes the game-time flow a little easier," Witzmann said.

Speed also helps. That's why Stig has preached getting faster following last season and it's paying off.

"Speed kills in football, there's no doubt. If you can outrun people or close on them on defense you're a better football program," Stiegelmeier said.
