O'Gorman Continues Their Tennis Dynasty

Sioux Falls, SD

South Dakota has a few programs that can be describe as a dynasty in their class or sport. Washington can hold that title in football. The White River boys are as successful as they come on the basketball court. However no team is more dominate in their sport than the O'Gorman Lady Knights tennis team.

"I think O'Gorman's legacy is improving and we are all super happy about that," O'Gorman Junior Morgan Brower said.

And why wouldn't they be? This year the Lady Knights captured their 7th consecutive state title while breaking the tournament record for team points with 764. So is this the best team the program has seen?

"You hate to categorize them and put them in order, but they are one of the better teams we have had a lot of good ones," O'Gorman Tennis Coach Don Barnes said.

This team also took first in five of the six singles finals, plus all three doubles championships. Junior Megan Brower came in as the top ranked player and will head into next season that way too. It is impressive how this team handles the pressure year in and year out.

"I think it's amazing. To me, how they handle it is almost better than I do. They know they have a target on their back every time they play and they are going to get everyone's best shot. They have withstood all of that. They are amazing kids," Barnes said.

All but two of this year's championship team will be back in 2014. With so much fire power and an even bigger target on their back the only question now is can they claim an unprecedented eighth straight title?

"I hope so. If we keep working hard like we did last summer I think we can really improve again. Hopefully we will have the same outcome," Brower said.

This year's state qualifiers for O’Gorman went a combined 151-3. The doubles teams combined to finish 77-1.
