MSU Moorhead (16-7, 10-6 NSIC) hit nine 3-pointers and led by as much as 23 on its way to a 79-62 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Augustana (16-5, 12-5 NSIC) on Friday night. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Vikings.
MSUM’s Anthony Tucker finished with a game-high 22 points while knocking down four 3-pointers in the contest. Alex Novak added a double-double for the Dragons with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Cameron McCaffrey finished the game with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists while Zach Huisken added 11 and Daniel Jansen pitched in with his first-career double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Augustana shot 43 percent from the field in the contest but were just 2 of 22 from 3-point range for a season-low 9.1 percent shooting from behind the arc.
The first half looks as if we would see a battle all night long until the Vikings were able to build a six-point lead at 22-16 after a jumper by Leif Nomeland with 11:20 to play in the first frame. Nomeland scored six of his eight points on the night in the first half.
From that point on, MSU Moorhead went on an 11-2 run to take a 29-26 lead with 6:53 to go in the half. Huisken hit a jumper with 4:57 to play in the half to cut MSUM’s lead to one but the Dragons finished the half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-31 halftime lead.
MSU Moorhead shot 53 percent from the field, including 6 of 15 from 3-point range and was led by Tucker’s 10 first-half points.
The Vikings were 13 of 29 (45 percent) from the field, but were just 2 of 12 from 3-point range and 3 of 7 from the free throw line.
Out of the locker room, MSUM took a nine-point lead and quickly turned it into a 17-point lead (54-37) less than five minutes into the half.
The Dragons would lead by as much as 23 points in the second half on its way to a 79-62 win over the Vikings. Augustana drops to 3-4 all-time against the dragons in Moorhead.
Augustana will look to rebound tomorrow night taking on Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. beginning at 7 p.m. at Wachs Arena.
