Goldeyes Top Canaries In Game One 6-3

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA - Despite scoring a pair of runs in the 1st inning, the Canaries (30-60) were unable to sustain that momentum and dropped the first game in their doubleheader north of the border Friday evening, 6-3.  The Winnipeg Goldeyes (57-33) extended their winning streak to six and a win in game two would clinch them the North Division crown.

Steve Tinoco singled to start the game for the Birds and Brandon Jones followed with a double.  AJ Kirby-Jones then hit a deep groundball to score Tinoco and Jones came around on Chris Duffy's RBI single.

Matt Wickswat took the mound armed with a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the 1st but was not sharp.  Reggie Abercrombie, Donnie Webb and Josh Mazzola delivered RBI singles in succession and Winnipeg held a 3-2 edge by the end of the frame.  Tyler Kuhn and Abercrombie each drove in another run in the 2nd and Winnipeg's lead jumped to 5-2.  The Goldeyes' surge was briefly interrupted by AJ Kirby-Jones's solo blast in the 3rd, his 22nd of the season, but Winnipeg squashed the Canary rally when Kuhn hit a homerun of his own in the 4th to make it 6-3 in favor of the Goldeyes.

Wickswat was able to go the distance in defeat, allowing six runs on nine hits in six innings of work while walking three and striking out just one.  The lefty fell to 3-8 with the loss.  Ryan Bollinger (2-0) earned his second win over the Canaries in a week, going five innings and allowing the three runs.  The trio of Taylor Sewitt, Gabe Aguilar and Chris Kissock shut down the Canaries over the final two innings with Kissock earning his 16th save.

Tinoco finished with two hits for the Canaries and Kirby-Jones drove in two runs.  Kuhn and Abercrombie each drove in a pair of runs for the Goldeyes.
