DWU Tied For 20th At NAIA Golf Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. – After two rounds at the NAIA Women’s Golf National Championships, the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team is tied for 20th in the team standings.

The Tigers, who were tied for 19th Tuesday after the first round, shot a 337 Wednesday to finish with a two-round total of 669. Dakota Wesleyan is tied with the University of South Carolina-Beaufort. After Thursday’s third round there will be a cut and the top 17 teams make Friday’s fourth and final round.

SCAD Savannah leads the field with a 608 after two rounds. Oklahoma City University, which led after the first day, is in second with a 611 and University of the Cumberlands is third with a 618.

Senior Chelsea Burback is still the individual leader for the Tigers. She shot an 81 Wednesday and dropped from a tie for 35th to a tie for 41st. Burback shot a 79 Tuesday. She is tied with two other golfers in 41st. Sophomore Lauren Fitts is second individually for DWU with a 167. She is tied for 72nd, a 29-place improvement from Tuesday’s first round. Fitts shot an 81 Wednesday, a five-stroke improvement from her 86 in the first round.

Freshman April Barnett is tied for 88th for Dakota Wesleyan with a two-round total of 170. She carded an 87 Wednesday, four strokes higher than the 83 she shot on Tuesday. Juniors Jenna Winckler and Tiera Feller round out the Tigers’ top five. Winckler is in 106th with a 173 after shooting an 89 Wednesday. Feller is tied for 107th with a 174. She shot an 88 Wednesday.

Daniela Martinez of Northwood University (Texas) leads the individual field after two rounds with a 146. Oklahoma City’s Elia Folch and SCAD Savannah’s Alazne Urizar are tied for second with 147s, and Northwood (Florida)’s Bri LaFoca is fourth with a 148.

The third round will be played Thursday, May 22, at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln.
