True Freshman Keaten Schorr, wrestling unattached at 149 pounds, led the way for the Augustana wrestling team at the Warrior-Viking Open in Fremont, Neb. on Saturday. Schorr was the lone Viking to take first, but Augustana finished with 11 placers on the day.
Schorr’s path to first started with a pin over Paul Longshore of Midland, followed up by a major decision over teammate Noah North. In the semis, Schorr earned a victory in the semifinals when Nebraska-Kearney’s Keith Surber was disqualified. In the finals, Schorr outlasted Jack Wilson by a 4-3 decision to earn the first place finish.
Regan Bye finished in second at 165 pounds, going 2-1 on the day. Bye defeated Ronnie Nelson of Midland in the first round with a pin and was victorious over teammate Ben Kelvington in the semis by a 8-5 decision. Bye fell in the finals to Joe Cornejo by a 16-4 major decision.
Daniel Bishop, wrestling unattached at 184 pounds, finished in second. Bishop opened with a 16-4 major decision over Sam Gregory of Grandview and defeated Ethan Leighton of Grandview by a 12-6 decision in the semis. Bishop fell by a major decision in the finals to Artie Bess of Grandview.
Ben Kelvington took third at 165 pounds with his only loss coming against teammate Regan Bye in the semis. Kelvington defeated teammate Tanner Brengle in the consolation semis and Talon Seitz of Nebraska-Kearney twice, including a tech fall in the third place match.
Lukas Poloncic also finished in third at 174 pounds. Poloncic opened the meet with a pin against Heber Shepherd of Chadron State, but fell in the semis against Dylan Blackford of Grandview. Poloncic defeated a pair of teammates en route to his third place finished, winning against Hunter Haman and Austin Ward.
Clayton Wahlstrom at 197 pounds was the third Viking to earn a third place finish on the day. Wahlstrom dropped his opening match, then went on to reel off four straight wins to take third. Wahlstrom pinned Dakota Carnes of St. Mary and earned decisions over Adam Ball of Midland and Corey Van Dorn of Nebraska-Kearney. Wahlstrom avenged his loss by defeating Andrew Demos of Nebraska-Kearney in the third place match.
Bruce Lemon Jr. (157) and Austin Ward (174) finished in fourth and Viking fifth place finishers were Noah North (149-unattached), Hunter Haman (174), Luke Nohns (285).
With only three entrants at 125 pounds, Brandon Carroll and Ethan Cota each defeated Rafael Vargas by tech fall in their lone match of the day.
Next up for Augustana, will be its first NSIC dual of the season. The Vikings will take on Northern State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4 at the Elmen Center.
