CSB: Melsted Central Region Coach Of The Year

Augustana head softball coach Gretta Melsted has been named Central Region Coach of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Melsted guided the Vikings to a berth in the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship, where they lost to No. 3 Kutztown and to No. 1 and eventual champion Valdosta State. It was the Vikings’ first national appearance since 1998.

Augustana capped the 2012 season with a 53-12 record, including a 22-4 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The 53 wins are the most since 2000 when the Vikings finished 58-12.

In her six seasons at Augustana, Melsted has compiled a 219-117 record. Her career record is 300-208. She has had four consecutive seasons of 30 or more wins with the Vikings. Augustana has won two conference championships and has twice been the runner-up in the last four seasons.

This season the Vikings notched five consecutive wins to capture the Central 2 Region and Super Region championships. Augustana has advanced to the Super Region championship series each of the last two years.

The Vikings were ranked No. 5 in the final NFCA Top 25 Poll for 2012, finishing the season with the second most wins in the nation.
