Augustana head softball coach Gretta Melsted has been named Central Region Coach of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Melsted guided the Vikings to a berth in the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship, where they lost to No. 3 Kutztown and to No. 1 and eventual champion Valdosta State. It was the Vikings’ first national appearance since 1998.
Augustana capped the 2012 season with a 53-12 record, including a 22-4 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The 53 wins are the most since 2000 when the Vikings finished 58-12.
In her six seasons at Augustana, Melsted has compiled a 219-117 record. Her career record is 300-208. She has had four consecutive seasons of 30 or more wins with the Vikings. Augustana has won two conference championships and has twice been the runner-up in the last four seasons.
This season the Vikings notched five consecutive wins to capture the Central 2 Region and Super Region championships. Augustana has advanced to the Super Region championship series each of the last two years.
The Vikings were ranked No. 5 in the final NFCA Top 25 Poll for 2012, finishing the season with the second most wins in the nation.
