Jon Anderson's 1st game as USF's Head Coach had his team facing the preseason pick in the NSIC North Division, Minnesota-Duluth. The Coo's win over the Bulldogs snapped UMD's 22 game home win streak and handed their new coach his first victory at USF.
"Thought our coaches did a great job preparing the players and they did a great job executing. So it was a lot of fun and you know we sit back and enjoy that for a certain amount of time but then we got to get back to work," Head Coach Jon Anderson said.
The Cougar defense led the way, setting D-2 program records in net rushing yards, sacks and tackles for loss. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck earned Conference Player of the Week honors for his performance which included 5 sacks. He credits the team's approach to the week for their success.
"Starts with Coach B preparing us very well for the game. Had some awesome packages for us. Then just everybody being a student of the game, learning and watching film and everything like that. And then high energy, high effort on gameday is what got it done," Linebacker Dennis Gardeck said.
USF's offense put up only 195 yards, though much of that was due to the situation of the game, but it still has the Cougar offense eager to show what it can do.
"Being consistent and making sure we stick to our game plan. I mean things do changes as the game goes on, but I mean, Northern's got a good defense, and again Duluth did too, so we're going to keep running the ball, passing ball, we're going to keep doing our thing and eventually, I mean, eventually we're going to get some yards and get a lot more yards," Running Back Max Mickey said.
The Coo welcome in-state rival Northern State for their home opener, which has the players extremely excited.
"We haven't played a South Dakota team in a little bit it seems like, we're looking forward to that. It's going to be fun. Northern always brings a good game, good crowd, so it's going to be a fun one," Mickey said.
