The Augustana football team thought their season was going according to plan, opening the season with a win against Northern State. But after falling to the University of Mary this past weekend in Bismarck, the Vikings hope to get back on track Saturday against Minnnesota-Crookston.
Now, with two games in the books, the Augustana Vikings are trying to find their identity.
"We've got to learn to play on the road a little better I think. We let some of the distractions get to us a little bit and that affected our play. So the second game we had a few too many mental mistakes, which ended up costing us in the long run,” head coach Mike Aldrich said. “We've seen some good things and some bad things, but all of them are things that we can learn from to get ready for the next one.”
In their 31-25 loss against the Marauders, the Vikings missed three field goals and gave up over 400 yards in the air. While the defense and special teams look to get better, senior quarterback Josh Hanson says it's a team effort.
"Turnovers in the red zone aren't acceptable and that puts a lot of pressure on the defense and when you do that you give them free points, so we can't do that,” Hanson said. “As for me I've got to be better and I think everybody on this team has to get better and they'd agree with that. If we do that we can be good.”
Now at 1-1 on the season the Vikings are looking ahead to Minnesota-Crookston this weekend. Augie will be at home for the matchup and they hope the atmosphere at K.O. helps them return to their winning ways.
"Minnesota-Crookston plays really hard. Their a much improved team and we have got to be ready to play. I think we will be, we want to rebound after a loss and get back on the winning track," Hanson said.
Augustana and The Golden Eagles are set to square off Saturday at Kirkeby Over Stadium. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
