Canaries Optimistic Despite Slow Start

Sioux Falls, SD

The Canaries had high hopes entering this season after finishing last in the American Association North Division standings. They entered tonight ???-???, last in the division, but they are confident they can turn this year around.

The Canaries may have a sub-par record early in their 2014 campaign, but it could just as easily be the other way around. Over half of their losses have come by just one run. That is why the Birds believe they won't be grounded for long.

"I think we're still a work in progress and our record indicates that. We've also lost two games in the bottom of the ninth and a game in extra innings. We have also lost a lot of games by one run and that tells me that we're really close. We just need to perform a little bit better to make the win happen for ourselves. We have to go and take the win. We have to earn the win," Canaries Manager Steve Shirley said.

Newcomer, Brandon Jones, is still optimistic that his new team will do just that. He brings 51 games of big league experience to this year's squad and believes it's as simple as getting back to the basics.

"We need to cut down the small mistakes. We're not a team that is going to hit a hundred home runs, so we need to do the little things. Once we all get clicking and get some guys going we will be pretty good at the end of the year," Canaries OF Brandon Jones said.

One guy that has gotten going early on is Shelby Ford. He is currently second in the league in batting average and showing leadership by playing multiple positions. If this flocks other key additions such as Chris Duffy, and A.J. Kirby-Jones can begin to put the ball in flight, the Canaries may be able to do the same.

"I'm trying to take it one at bat at a time and one pitch at a time. If they make a mistake I'm going to try and put a good swing on it and hopefully capitalize," Canaries IF Shelby Ford said.

"It's not a matter of individual production. Ford has been doing a great job, Jones, Duffy, and even Dultz. I think all through our lineup we've got guys that are very capable of taking care of the job. Now they've just got to do it," Shirley said.

The Canaries will return to The Birdcage June 13 for a five game home stand.
