What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
The term cosmetic dentistry gets thrown around a lot. But it is an umbrella term that covers a numbers of dental treatments. So what does Cosmetic Dentistry really entail and what does it mean for you? Let’s find out. Dental Bonding
Dental Bonding is a tooth colored resin used when a tooth has been chipped to restore it to it’s original appearance. It can also be used to close gaps and shape teeth. Dental Crowns
A Dental Crown or “cap” fits over a tooth that has too much damage to be structurally sound or aesthetically pleasing due to decay, fractures or breaks. Dental Crowns known as Cerec Crowns are made during the patient’s appointment, while Lab Crowns are sent to the lab and placed on a different date. Crowns are usually made of porcelain or ceramic. They can also be used to correct misshapen or short teeth. Veneers
Dental Veneers are very thin, porcelain covers that are bonded over the front surface of your teeth. They are used to correct misshaped, short or discolored teeth. Very little of the tooth structure is removed for a veneer.
Gone are the days of dark silver fillings screaming their presence to everyone who looks. Composite Fillings are tooth colored. They bond better to the tooth and do not contract in size like silver fillings (which would lead to tooth fractures), creating a longer lasting restoration. Gum Reshaping
Sometime our gum tissue does not naturally sit where it should, causing either a “gummy smile” or an uneven gum line. In this procedure the gum is contoured to a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing level. This can sometimes include removal of excess bone, but normally just gum tissue to uncover your smile. Dental Implants
Dental Implants replace a missing tooth, multiple teeth or secure a denture. A metal post is place into the jawbone acting as a tooth root. The bone will bond to the metal. A dental crown would then be attached to the post. Having a dental implant placed not only replaced the missing tooth but help to retain the jawbone structure as the bone has a reason to be there. Teeth Whitening
When teeth become discolored there are a few Teeth Whitening techniques that can help. Commonly a dentist will recommend custom made trays that fix over your teeth with a bleach gel that is used once a day for a week or two until the desired shade is readed.
