Democrat Matt Varilek says he raised more than $103,000 in campaign funds in the first month after formally announcing his run for South Dakota's lone U.S. House seat.
Varilek says when he entered the race for the Democratic nomination on Dec. 2, he hoped to raise $50,000 by the end of the month. The former economic development director for U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson says he raised more than twice that.
Varilek and Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth are both seeking the Democratic endorsement to run against Republican Rep. Kristi Noem this year.
Noem has a big lead in fundraising over the two Democrats. Through the end of September, Noem had raised more than $1 million for her re-election bid.
