Strong Early Voting Turnout In Lyon County, IA

rock rapids, ia

Iowa is the first of the presidential battleground states to begin early voting.  The turnout is strong in Lyon County, where the auditor's office has mailed out 250 absentee ballots.
The constant barrage of campaign calls is one of the factors motivating Hedy Kruger to cast her ballot early.

"I can just say, 'I'm done.  You don't need to bug me anymore with your phone calls or anything like that. I've already voted,'" Kruger said.

And Kruger isn't alone.  A quarter of all Lyon County voters could be voting early for this election.  Since Iowans may tip the balance in the race for the White House, the parties have launched aggressive get-out-the-vote early campaigns across the state.

"Both Republicans and Democratic parties are working it hard; they're working for their people," Lyon County Auditor Wayne Grooters said.

But it's not just presidential politics that are drawing voters to the polls in Lyon County.  There are also high-profile races for county superintendent, sheriff and auditor.

"For this general election, I think we're on a higher scale as far as how many people are going to be requesting absentee votes simply because of the publicity that's going around both nationally and for our county," Lyon County Clerk of Elections Sara Sprock said.

Living in a battleground state has made Iowans a highly-coveted voting block.  It's a responsibility that voters in Lyon County don't take lightly.

"It's good to have it done and just have that one thing checked-off your list that you have to do," Kruger said.

Absentee turnout will get a further boost when Lyon County opens early voting satellite stations in Little Rock and Inwood, for one day only, on October 11.
