A House panel supports a bill that provides a model bullying policy for South Dakota school districts.
The House Education Committee on Monday unanimously passed an amended version of a bill that incorporates proposals by Attorney General Marty Jackley and Sen. Dan Lederman.
If the measure becomes law, the 12 school districts that lack a bullying policy can adopt the state version, modify it or adopt their own. The model prohibits bullying, describes it and sets procedure for reporting and investigating it.
The bill's definition of bullying includes the word "repeated" before describing the conduct. The bill also provides a starting point for dealing with "cyber," or electronic, harassment.
The bill now goes to the full House for a vote.
