SD Candidates Starting The Campaign Push

Sioux Falls, SD

Political campaigns are starting to hit the front lawns of Sioux Falls voters.

Candidates are out knocking on doors and posting their names in yard after yard.

Under city ordinance, campaign signs can't go up more than 60 days before an election, and now that it’s within that time frame, legislative candidates say it’s crucial to start working.

"The garage is the campaign office and the campaign manager is my wife so it's a very bare-bones operation, grassroots operation," Democratic candidate for the House Mike Knudson said.

This is the first time Knudson is running for the South Dakota House of Representatives and he's made quick work of getting his name to the curb.

"You get to try to do what you can to get your name out there and let people know what you stand for as well," Knudson said.

One of his opponents, Republican Manny Steele, also operates his campaign out of his garage and has been busy putting up signs and knocking on doors in the last few days. He says it can sometimes be tough to run for the state legislature when there are much bigger races on the ballot.

"Because of the presidential race, all the state races can get lost in the shuffle and I just feel we need to get out and get the name recognition out there," Steele said.

That's why it’s important for the local candidates to get to work as soon as they can to set themselves apart in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

"If they haven't already, they will be hearing from me. I will be on all of their doors, each precinct," Steele said.

Because of redistricting, it will also be important for voters to check on their district and who they will be voting for now because some of the candidates who represented you in the past may not represent you now.
