Rapid City Mayor Catching Flak For Campaign Calls

Rapid City, SD

The president of the Rapid City City Council is calling for Mayor Sam Kooiker to resign or take a leave of absence to do political work.

Council President Jerry Wright says it's inappropriate for Kooiker to lend his voice to "robocalls" that endorse two county candidates.

Rapid City residents have recently reported receiving the taped campaign phone calls from Kooiker, who is not running in this election. The calls endorse candidates John Roberts and Jordan Mason for county positions.

Wright says he received the calls himself and calls the endorsements an inappropriate use of Kooiker's position. The mayor says Wright's anger is puzzling as the president endorsed Kooiker's opponents last year.

Secretary of State Jason Gant tells KOTA News there's nothing illegal about an elected official endorsing another candidate.
