It's the issue that won't go away in Sioux Falls. And the council discussed the city's potential snow gate use again on Tuesday.
The Sioux Falls city clerk's office has verified that there are enough signatures on a petition in support of snow gates to put the issue to the ballot. Organizers of the petition drive are happy with that, but now everyone is wondering just when the snow gate question will be settled by a vote.
This is the third test year of the snow gates, which attach to the plows to keep large amounts of snow out of residents' driveways. Tests have shown they are more expensive to operate than blades without the gates on them. They also take drivers more time.
The group pushing for the devices gathered more than 8,000 signatures to put the question to a special election, but some members of the city council want to wait until 2014 to raise the issue, saying the city needs to do its due diligence and not rush in.
The question could go to voters as soon as May of 2013, which is what proponents are pushing for.
The city council didn't make a decision on Tuesday. An election resolution is expected by next week's regular meeting.
