Council Considers Change To Park Power

Sioux Falls, SD

The Sioux Falls City Council is considering a proposal that would give the council more authority over city parks.

Right now, changes have to go through the parks board before the city council can consider park issues.

Prompted by the problems recently at Van Eps Park, and the push to ban alcohol in the park, the city council is looking to change the ordinance. The council is considering a proposal that would allow it to approve park changes at city parks without prior approval of the parks board.

City council chair Dean Karsky doesn't think the change will speed up the process of addressing the Van Eps Park issue, but it would give the council more power over parks in the future.

The council will hold a first reading on the ordinance change during its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
