Governor Dennis Daugaard will sign a bill aimed at reforming the state's criminal justice system Wednesday afternoon.
The Public Safety Improvement Act changes the way the state deals with non-violent drug and alcohol offenders by increasing the use of alternative sentencing courts and cutting back on the number of people being sent to prison.
The bill is a bi-partisan victory with strong support from both sides of the aisle.
One of the organizations that will be directly affected by this bill is the Glory House in Sioux Falls.
Glory House offers offenders the chance to adjust from life in the system to one in society, but with extra help and support.
The executive director of the Glory House says there is a tremendous amount of opportunity in what Governor Daugaard is doing. While it will save money in the state's budget because fewer people will be behind bars, it will also help save lives.
