Absentee Voting Starts Soon

Sioux Falls, SD

Absentee voting begins Friday in South Dakota.  That has auditor's offices across the state preparing, including the one in Minnehaha County.

"We think it is going to take off pretty quick here.  We're estimating somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000l; that is our best guess here," Auditor Bob Litz said.

Boxes of ballots await those soon-to-be voters.  Meanwhile, the auditor's office has been busy processing voter registrations and updates.  The deadline for that is still weeks away.  But the steady stream of people could be an indication of a strong voter turnout ahead.

"It has been real steady.  We've got a bit stack of those that we've turned into the state.  We work with the state every day to update that list.  That is an ongoing process but it has definitely ramped up in the last month," Litz said.

And the office isn't just preparing for absentee voting; they're also looking forward to November when the general election happens.

"Is the pressure there, yes.  I mean, I have to get about 450 people to come work this election," Litz said.

But that is still a couple turns away on the calendar, while absentee voting begins soon.
