Site preparation work has started on a $1.5 million power substation in Rapid City.
The substation will serve the growing power needs of the area. It will be shielded by a stone wall and landscaping.
The city approved the permit for the substation in September.
It is part of $17.5 million in work approved that month in a record-setting year for construction in Rapid City.
The city issued permits for $211.9 million in building and remodeling projects through September. This is just shy of the $212.6 million permitted in all of 2007.
