The prison inmate who admitted to killing South Dakota Correctional Officer Ron Johnson says he deserves to die for his crime.
Eric Robert is one of three inmates accused of murdering Johnson during a failed escape attempt in April.
In September, Robert pleaded guilty to murder. Now, a judge will decide whether he'll be sentenced to life or death.
A sentencing hearing began on Monday. Attorney General Marty Jackley must prove the crime was so heinous that Robert deserves the death penalty.
Jackley called several correctional officers to the stand Monday to describe what happened on April 12 when Robert tried to escape with fellow inmate Rodney Berget. The third inmate, Michael Joseph Nordman, was not charged in the crime until September.
