Wessington Springs Hospital Begins Recovery

Wessington Springs, SD

Staff at Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital and Weskota Manor Avera staff are not only dealing with the minor injuries from Wednesday Night's tornado in Wessington Springs, they are also having to deal with damage to the two buildings there.

Despite the seriousness of this storm only one patient was seen at the hospital for injuries. This patient has been treated and released.

Both Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital and Weskota Manor Avera sustained only minor roof damage. Staff on duty at the time the twister struck followed pre-planned precautions to protect patients.

The tornado’s path was about a half a block east of the hospital. Because the storm knocked out power lines, the hospital continues to operate on emergency power backup Thursday morning.

Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell sent support staff to Avera Weskota to help with building repairs, which include holes in the outer membrane of the roof and shattered windows. Avera Weskota administrative staff are helping with the cleanup, and otherwise, the hospital and nursing home are operating as usual.
