Students Help Sioux Falls Man

Multiple Sclerosis has many symptoms, such as numbness, stiffness, and temporary loss of vision. These obstacles make it difficult for people with MS to do yard work and other chores such as window washing.
That's why a 44-year-old Sioux Falls man was happy to get help Saturday from a group of volunteers.

Pat Lynch was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1990. Since then he's learned to adjust to added aches and pains.

"As far as yard work and such, I try to do everything myself; try," Lynch said.

But it's difficult.

"I have not been able to get to some of these windows for some time because of my disability," Lynch said.

Today he got a break. Six Augustana students joined Lynch at his home to help out.

"I'm really glad we can come out and help him today," Elizabeth Stewart said.

They were part of more than 170 Augustana students participating in an annual spring cleanup volunteer project. But this group says helping someone like Lynch, who can really use it, is even more rewarding.

"It's just kind of fun to help someone who's in need," Rebecca VanDe Griend said.

They came to help with yard work. The only problem: snow.

"My yard needed to be raked, but with the snow cover, I don't think that's going to happen today," Lynch said.

Even though it snowed, Lynch is still thankful the students were able to help, because washing windows is difficult with MS.

"To have them come and help me out saves my strength and saves it for something else down the road," Lynch said.

"I know that he obviously couldn't get up and clean those windows," Rollie Steck said.

For them, it's worth giving up a saturday.

"It's just a fun thing to do, giving of your time to someone else," Lynch said.

When it means so much to someone else.

"Something like this here is awesome," Lynch said.

After making quick work of the windows at Lynch's house, this group of students helped out at two other Sioux Falls homes.
