The state's court system handled about 5 percent fewer cases in the past year.
The Unified Judicial System said 151,232 criminal cases and 84,817 civil cases were filed in state courts in the fiscal year ending last June 30. The 236,049 cases compares to 248,936 in the previous fiscal year.
The majority of the criminal cases are for misdemeanors like speeding, failing to use a seat belt or failing to have proof of insurance.
About one-third of the civil case filings were in small claims court.
