Some officials are questioning 2010 census data on American Indians in South Dakota.
University of South Dakota history professor emeritus Herbert Hoover says that he thinks Native Americans are
undercounted. He thinks Indians account for about 15 percent of South Dakota's total population, not the 8.8 percent cited by the Census Bureau.
Some tribal officials also question the census figures, though they also say officials made a great effort to count Indians.
Myron Pourier is with the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, which encompasses all of Shannon County. He says the reservation population has quadrupled recently, and he's skeptical of the official census numbers for the county.
