Some Areas Getting Dry In August

Summer-time rains can certainly be hit or miss.
Some areas receive several inches of rain in a short period of time and others go without for weeks.

Early this summer, the persistent rains kept most of KELOLAND very wet. But so far, August has turned the tide on wet weather with a drier trend for much of the area.

August is typically one of drier summertime months. Monthly normals usually run from 0.07 of an inch to 1.5 inches by mid-month. So far this August, most areas haven't seen much for rain especially in eastern South Dakota. When you compare our totals to normal, most of the east is below normal, while most of the central and west are above normal for the month.

The moisture situation is tough for many communities. Some areas still have full lakes and sloughs while their crops are starting to dry out in the field.
