As military operations in the Middle East continue to wind down there's a lot of focus on helping veterans transition into civilian life. Part of that means finding a job in the civilian workforce.
But military experience may qualify veterans for a job with the Rapid City Police Department.
It's not always an easy job, but Senior Officer Ron Terviel is hard at work patrolling the streets of Rapid City. But before he put on the blue uniform, Terviel wore camouflage in the U.S. Marine Corps and Army National Guard.
"You know, I went in at 19 years old and traveled around the world a few times in six years. I saw a lot of things, went a lot of places, met a lot of people," Terviel said.
He's been with the Rapid City Police Department for more than a decade, and found that many of the skills he picked up in the military transfer directly into law enforcement.
"It was right back to working as a team member and as a team as a whole," Terviel said.
"We have hired people because they've recently retired from the military, or they have a combination of college and military experience," Captain Dan Rud with the Rapid City Police Department said.
Part of Terveil's 22-years of experience with the service included work with the Military Police. But military veterans don't need to have law enforcement experience to be qualified for a position with the Rapid City Police Department.
"It doesn't matter to us exactly what that experience is, because the military can offer so many different types of skills and skill sets that can be useful in law enforcement," Rud said.
Four years of active duty service in any branch of the military will qualify veterans to work with the department. Non-veterans must have at least two-years of college experience or four years of law enforcement experience.
"We look for people that have that calling, have that sense of calling, that sense of duty. That's what we're looking for," Rud said.
The Rapid City Police Department is looking to hire multiple officers. Applications are due by December 5.
