Senate OKs Bill To Pay For Disasters, Emergencies

pierre, sd

The South Dakota Senate has passed a bill that sets aside money for emergencies and disasters.

Lawmakers voted 28-0 Friday to put about $14 million toward potential disasters like last year's flooding of the Missouri River.

The measure also provides about $6 million to the state "fire suppression special revenue fund" for costs related to the mountain pine beetle infestation plaguing the Black Hills.

The beetles have plagued hundreds of thousands of acres and threaten tourism, one of the state's largest industries.

Next, the bill goes to Gov. Dennis Daugaard's desk for his signature.
