SD House Panel Urges Smaller Cut To Nursing Homes

pierre, sd

A South Dakota legislative panel has endorsed a plan to soften the effect of budget cuts on most nursing homes and community centers that care for developmentally disabled people.

The bill's main sponsor, Rep. Scott Munsterman of Brookings, says he doesn't know if the bill will become law. But he says the measure could help shape the Legislature's discussions about budget cuts.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proposed a 10 percent cut in state reimbursements to doctors, hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities that provide medical services to poor people in the Medicaid program.  Munsterman's bill would give smaller percentage cuts to operations such as nursing homes where a big proportion of patients are on Medicaid.

The House Judiciary Committee sent the bill to the full House.
